Healing in Community – The Power of Group Sessions

They say healing happens in community, and we couldn’t agree more. While one-on-one support is valuable, there’s something uniquely powerful about coming together with peers who “get it.” That’s why ROS offers various group sessions and programs – to help our participants connect, learn, and grow together. 🤗

In a group session, you might find a safe space to share your story and realise you’re not alone in your feelings. You might also pick up new coping tools from others (“Oh, you listen to music when you feel anxious? Maybe I’ll try that!”). Here are a few types of groups we run or plan to launch:

●      Peer Support Circles: These are small, facilitator-led groups where members can talk about their week’s highs and lows, offer each other encouragement, and swap tips for coping. It’s informal and supportive – often over a cup of tea. Many say these circles feel like a little family.

●      Skills Workshops: Sometimes we host themed group sessions focused on building a particular skill. For example, a Communication Skills Group for those who want to practice social interactions in a friendly setting, or a Mindfulness Workshop series where we all try different mindfulness exercises and discuss what works for us. Learning alongside others can make the process less intimidating and more fun.

●      Creative Expression Groups: Healing can happen through art, music, or writing – especially in a group where you can share creations. We’ve seen beautiful moments in a creative journaling group, where someone reads a poem they wrote about their recovery and others snap fingers in support and understanding. 🎨🎶

What makes group sessions special is the sense of community. Humans are social creatures; feeling connected and accepted by others improves our mental well-being. Group members often report increased confidence and a feeling of belonging. Over time, they celebrate each other’s victories (like, “Remember when you first came in you barely spoke, and now you led a discussion! Go you!”). It’s heartwarming and empowering.

At ROS, all our groups are facilitated with a trauma-informed, welcoming approach. You can share as much or as little as you’re comfortable with. Inclusivity is key – everyone is respected, no matter their background or story. We often end groups with a round of saying one positive thing we’re taking away, leaving on a hopeful note.

If you’ve never tried a group session, we encourage you to give it a go. It might feel nerve-wracking at first (totally normal!), but many people quickly find that it’s relieving to meet others on similar journeys. Together, we lift each other up. Your story might inspire someone else, and their story might light a spark in you. That’s the power of community healing. 🌱
